Kajal's Story

Meet Kajal. A nine year old living in India, where she lives with over 5000 people who have no running water, sewage, toilet facilities or electricity. Most of them aren't educated.

A normal day

She is up at 5am, has a cup of tea and then goes straight to work. Her work consists of having to search through piles of dirty, unhygienic rubbish. She competes against the animals that also rummage through the rubbish looking for food.

The Conditions

She hurts herself quite often. Usually she gets blisters, cuts and has also been hit by a car while working in the early hours.

After her mum died, she had to leave school to look after her younger brother and sister.

'We used to play, study...once they took us to a zoo, I really liked it there'.

2 years on the streets has taught her multiple things. She knows its her role to provide for the family and to earn money, but being a nine-year old, she earns basically nothing at all.
